Mail-order Bride
After contacting a mail-order agency, the vast majority of Filipina mail-order brides met their husbands by attending “present-ups”, a gathering during which a bunch of Filipina women are brought to fulfill a Korean man who’s on the lookout for a spouse. At the show-up the Korean man picks a prospective wife from among the group, and in a matter of days they are married. The New York Times reviews, “Every month, lots of of South Korean men fly to Vietnam, the Philippines, Nepal and Uzbekistan on special journeys. An agent escorts every man to see many ladies in a single day, generally all gathered in the same hall”. Although these marriages can be successful, in some circumstances immigrant wives are mistreated, misunderstood and separated from their Korean husbands. One methodology men use when selecting younger ladies as wives is “Like a decide in a magnificence pageant, the man interviews the women, a lot of them 20 years younger than he, and makes a choice”.
